The new Mercer County Animal Shelter opened on June 1, 2007, with 44 dog runs, 8 puppy runs and an expanded cat room.  The shelter also has an after-hours drop-off.  The shelter is owned and operated by the Mercer County Commission.  The shelter is located at 961 Shelter Road, Princeton,  WV 24740 beside the Mercer County Landfill on the southside of US Route 460 about half-way between Bluefield and Princeton.  Monetary donations, as well as the following supplies are greatly appreciated:  dry dog and cat food, liquid laundry detergent, Joy dish detergent, cat litter, trash bags, bleach, towels & wash clothes, blankets and dog leashes.  Please click on animal adoptions at the top of the page to see animals available for adoption.

Service Opportunities

Part Time

Volunteers are needed that LOVE animals.  Jobs for volunteers include: cleaning cages (usually between 9am and noon Mon-Sat), laundry, dishes, as well as caring for the animals.  Volunteers need not apply, simply show up when they have time wearing old pants and closed toed shoes ready to work.

Full Time

One Time

Come on out to help even if you can only do it once or for a few times. Plus, you can consider adopting an animal.
